BRIEF HISTORY OF NONI
Noni is a fruit
found typically in tropical climates, and has a long history of use throughout
Hawaii and other Pacific Islands, Africa, Caribbean and the Americas. Its recorded
history dates back over 2,000 years, with its earliest known record in Chinas
Han Dynasty. It is thought to be the most widely and commonly used medicinal
plant prior to the European era. 1
Noni is a particularly
hardy plant, able to reproduce and survive in the wild, partly because its seeds
can float and also because it can survive periods of drought. It appears to
thrive in the rich volcanic ash soil and moist, temperate climate of tropical
islands such as Hawaii. Though there are many species, Morinda citrifolia has
the most desirable properties. All parts of the plant and fruit have been used
for numerous purposes, the most notable of which are as food and medicine.
Noni has been
used for centuries by native Hawaiians as their most important health remedy.
In Hawaii, the traditional medicine man is known as kahuna lapaau. These
traditional medical doctors felt Noni was the sacred fruit for regenerating
the body and prescribed it for a wide variety of health problems, including
pain relief, headaches, infections, injuries, reproductive system disorders,
digestive problems, joint pain, skin and hair disorders, weight problems, and
many more. Their understanding, record keeping and administration of natural
remedies was quite thorough, and is considered by many to be extremely advanced.
